Antique Porcelain Coffee Pot Handpainted - Austria - circa early 1900s
Coffee is a lot more than just a drink, it's something happening. Gertrude Stein
{HISTORY}
Around here, we have a love affair with handpainted porcelain. Many of the porcelain pieces in the shop are marked Austria, which can mean several things... 1) That they were made in Austria. 2) That they were decorated in Austria but made in another country like France or Germany or 3) That they were made and decorated in another country but then sent to Austria for export to the US.
It's not quite certain which is the case with this antique porcelain coffee pot. Since it just bears the word Austria on the bottom it could have been involved in any one of the scenarios listed above. But if we had to take an educated guess we would say it most likely involved numbers 2 & 3 - meaning that it was made in another European county, handpainted in Austria, and then exported to the US to be sold by an independent dishware supplier.
Pieces like this would have then been available for purchase by American consumers in both department stores and also by dishware shops in many of the larger cities in the country like New York, Boston and Chicago.
Whatever the case, this one-hundred-year-old coffee pot has traveled an least an ocean or two, and then parts of the United States in order to eventually come to reside in the American South.
A beauty from all directions, it features handpainted blue flowers and yellow sprigs of blooming dill alongside branches of what look like lychee nuts. Accented with gold detailing along the spout and handle, it also contains a removable lid. Such an utterly gorgeous and elegant way to serve coffee!
