This is the platter of antique dreams when it comes to size and beauty!

Made by Charles Field Haviland, this limoges tray-sized platter has quite an international pedigree. Made in France and then sent to Carlsbad, Czechoslovakia sometime between 1884-1918, it was then exported to New York City where it was sold under the Bawo & Dotter brand.  A fourth country also appears in the back stamp too - Austria.  That is because Czechoslovakia was still under Austrian rule at the time this platter was made, and therefore all dishes exported from a Czechoslovakian city (in this case Carlsbad) had to be stamped with the Austrian government marks.

Rare and unique in size and style, it features branches of delicate handpainted blue flowers identified by Haviland collecting enthusiast, Arlene Schleiger, as pattern #1299-7. Enhanced with strong and sturdy decorative handles, it is a giant in size with a 15" inch diameter and a heavy weight (3.6lbs!), making it ideal for wedding cake size bakery confections, party platters and serving tray tasks.

We've written quite a bit about the talented Haviland family in both the shop here and on the blog here. As true masters of their trade, they've produced some of the most exquisite dishware designs the world has ever known. Even Claude Monet was impressed and inspired by their work!

In keeping with their fine craftsmanship, the US import firm Bawo & Dotter, established in New York City in the 1860s,  established their own reputation for offering US customers quality porcelain dishware. Known for their fine eye for detail, their ability to select pieces of stunning design and color, and their unceasing demands for high-quality craftmanship, Bawo & Dotter was a trusted source for dishware buyers in America.

Between France, Czechoslovakia, and the US it is fun to think of the adventures this tray has experienced in its long life. Now it's ready to adventure for another 140 years to come!
