{HISTORY}

Not only cute but also clever, ceramic pie birds were first invented in Britain during the 1800s as a way to let steam escape from double-crust pies while baking in the oven. Due to their unique shape, these little charmers prevented pie juices from bubbling over as well as prevented top crusts from sagging in the center. 

America caught on to these affable kitchen helpers in the 1920s and since then birds and pies have been constant companions throughout the 20th century and are still a popular baking accessory today. Made by many different companies throughout the past one hundred years, pie birds come in all shapes and sizes and include other animals and figures other than birds, in which case they are known as pie vents.

The original pie birds made in Britain were all white, making this pair a classic when it comes to pie bird styles. Identical in size and style, these two are of undetermined age and manufacturer. They are photographed alongside a vintage 1960s era black pie bird to highlight the differences in shape and style. Note the painted eyes, feathering detail and smaller body frame of the white pie birds. Such little personalities they each have!
