In any season, for many reasons... all signs favor Union Pacific Railroad. (1930's U. P. R. advertising slogan)

{HISTORY}

As a luxurious travel experience, Union Pacific passenger trains and overnight sleepers made train travel between the 1930's and 1970's both an exciting adventure and an elegant mode of travel. With routes carrying passengers between Omaha, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland and Chicago, travel by railroad in the early decades of the 20th century on the U.P.C. was a grand and glamorous way to experience the diverse topography of the west coast in comfortable style. Dining cars served an assortment of gourmet foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner and even provided special menus for babies and kids. Typical train fare in the 1930's included sugar baked ham, assorted seasonal vegetables, freshly baked pies, blue cheese and cracker snack plates, lamb chops, bacon and eggs, soup, salads and even fish dinners.

Although unmarked on the bottom, this set of five matching double-handled bouillon cups are from the beloved Blue Harriman pattern made for Union Pacific Railroad by Scammell's in Trenton, NJ sometime around the mid-1930's. Originally they would have come with a matching saucer. The two handles provided an elegant way to sip bouillon broth without sloshing it, especially as the train chugged along the tracks.

Today, in addition to soup cups these dishes also make lovely hot chocolate cups, with plenty of room for marshmallows piled high. Either way, they make cozy warm beverage holders for what ever delights your appetite, and provide an endless amount of daydreams as to the magnificent adventures these cups have had over the past 85 years. The last photograph in this listing was taken during the 1930's and looks t be featuring the same pattern of dishes as these. It's also a peek into the past to see what train travel looked like way back when!
