{HISTORY}

Moonlighting as a plant holder, a flower vase, and a functional display bowl, this vintage Shawnee Pottery dish made between the 1940s-1950s features a beautiful scalloped rim and a raised wheat pattern that wraps around both sides of the exterior. 

Made in Zanesville, Ohio, Shawnee made this style flower bowl in a variety of colors including white, old ivory, turquoise, golden yellow, and dusty rose, all shades that lent vibrant but neutral color to indoor spaces.

Shawnee Pottery only operated from 1937 to 1961. Such a slim manufacturing window means that some pieces, like this planter, are hard to find these days, which makes this little marvel all the more exciting to bring to the shop. Apart from its rarity and its beautifully balanced, artistic design, the true delight in this pottery piece serves at the whim of the decorator. Whether it holds a collection of small plants or a bouquet of big-blossomed, short-stemmed flowers or an assortment of fruits and veggies for seasonal displays, it was, and still very much is, an eye-catching statement piece in all situations.

Bright and colorful, the official factory color name of this flower bowl was turquoise, but in today's present color context, it's much closer to a pastel shade of mint or jadeite than turquoise. A soft neutral, despite its bright color, it surprisingly complements a lot of different colors that run the gamut from rusty reds to warm citrus shades to violet, butter yellow, and chocolate.
