Vintage Royal Sussex Chop Plate Platter - Brown and White Floral circa 1980s
EVERY LEAF SPEAKS BLISS TO ME, FLUTTERING FROM THE AUTUMN TREE. EMILY BRONTE
So classic and complementary to Autumn mealtimes and cozy holiday celebrations, this chop plate platter was made by the Royal China Jeanette Corporation in Sebring OH in the 1980s. Hefty in size and weight, this round platter was originally intended for serving large pieces of meat like steak, turkeys or numerous hamburgers just hot off the grill. But chop plates, despite their unromantic names, also make wonderful servers for cakes, pies, and piled high sweet treats.
Fifty years before this platter was made, the Royal China Co established itself during the 1930s. From the beginning, Royal China was a trendsetter in the industry. They had a female founder, created the first underglaze stamping machine, and hired an entire production line of workers on a delayed payment system so that the pottery could get on its feet and build a strong foundation without a lot of overhead costs during the difficult economic conditions of the Great Depression years.
Eventually becoming the third-largest dishware producer in the country, Royal acquired smaller potteries during the middle years of the 20th century before being acquired themselves by Jeanette Glass Co in the 1970s. That's the point in the company's history when these plates came into being. The Royal China and Jeanette Glass partnership didn't last quite as long though as Royal's initial run. Purchased by Coca-Cola in the early 1980s, the Royal line of Jeanette Glass ceased operation in 1986.
Even though this chop plate made in the Sussex pattern is just 35 years old, it retains a timeless style that fits well with any decade in the 1900s and even the century before that. This Royal pattern reminiscent of antique English transferware blends well with ironstone and classic all-white vintage dishware for a lovely layered mix-and-match aesthetic that calls out for warm Autumn foods. The espresso brown shade of the Sussex pattern looks especially gorgeous when paired with delectables hot off the grill or autumn theme desserts like pumpkin pie, brownies, smores, and chocolate laced cookies.
