Vintage Red and White Homer Laughlin Restaurant Ware Salad Plates circa 1959-1973
{HISTORY}
With its floral, shell, stripe and leaf motifs, there's a lot to love about this vintage Homer Laughlin restaurant ware pattern. Similar to Shenango's Chardon Rose pattern, this one was named American Rose and was a popular pattern among restaurants of all varieties back in the mid-to-late 20th century. So popular in fact, this pattern was brought back to the restaurant world in 2022 by Steellite International, the company that purchased Homer Laughlin's commercial division in 2020.
Unlike its modern-day predecessors, this set of four salad plates is true vintage. Each plate was made sometime between 1959 and 1973. Three of the four plates feature the original Best China mark which debuted in 1959, especially for the hotel industry. The fourth plate features the Homer Laughlin logo with Best China and the date code NA which signifies it was made in 1973.
Although there are no other clues as to which specific restaurant these four were a part of, it's fun to imagine all the possible places and patrons they could have served. Since they feature the words Best China, most likely they were made for a hotel or motel environment offering a stay-over/dine-in experience. Hotel conference centers, golf resorts, special event banquet facilities, travel lodges, and motor courts are all a few places that might have entertained and fed travelers on the go.
Sized at 7.25" inches in diameter, this set was originally intended as salad plates, but this size offers numerous modern possibilities too including use as dessert plates, bread plates and snack plate service.
