Vintage Tulip Print of an Antique Tulip Botanical Painting by Pierre Joseph Redoute - Tulipe de Gesner circa 1827
{HISTORY
Hailing from an artistic Saint-Hubert family, painter Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) was not only one of France’s most well-known and prolific botanical artists but he also served as draughtsman in Marie-Antoinette’s cabinet and was Josephine Bonaparte’s decorator and flower painter at Malmaison, the country house located just outside of Paris that she shared with her husband Napoleon.
Known for combining technical precision with stylish color arrangement and composition. Pierre-Joseph’s complete body of botanical paintings included over 1000 engravings throughout his career.
This painting, titled Tulipe de Gesner was completed in 1827 and features the red and yellow striped parrot tulip at center. Part of a parrot tulip series, Pierre-Joseph captured the dramatic color palettes, form and striated petals unique to this variety of the tulip family. An arrangement that makes them both a plant and art object all in one, tulip parrots are by far some of the most awe inspiring flowers of the spring garden.
This vintage print of the original 1827 engraving, beautifully captures the crisp, clear, and colorful details that Pierre-Joseph’s work was lauded for throughout his career. So pretty for framing, or displaying as is, this beautiful print favors the colors of spring with its soft lemon, eggplant, emerald and deep coral palette printed on pale ivory paper.
