A BIRD CAN CARRY ALL THE SKY IN THAT LITTLE BUTTON GLOWING... HAROLD MONRO

{HISTORY}

Made just after World War II, this vintage Japanese porcelain sugar bowl features handpainted birds and flowers with peach lustreware highlights and a removeable lid.

So colorful and delightfully shaped, the bird painted on the face of the sugar bowl most likely represents a parrot tucked inside a lustreware emblem flanked by flowering cherry blossoms.

Tea sets made in Japan during this era of the 1940s and 1950s were exotic gifts brought home to America, many by soldiers returning from service overseas.  Each one unique, thanks to the handpainted designs and skill of the artist who decorated them, it can be hard to find complete sets, but we are pleased to say that we discovered a matching teacup and saucer in this same pattern on a completely different scouting trip. It's fun to put vintage sets back together piece by piece, especially ones as old and as well-traveled as Japanese lustreware.

Featuring shades of peach, tangerine, white, black, gold, ice pink, and emerald green, this colorful sugar bowl is a functional item and an art piece all in one. Delightfully aged with its weathered gold handles and handpainted details, this sweet little charmer adds instant style to any tea tray or kitchen shelf.

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition. There are no chips, cracks or staining. The porcelain is bright white and very clean both inside and out. The interior contains four small balck dots, which are not chips, yet natural color imperfections found in the clay. There are some light rub marks on the lustreware background behind the bird as well as on the knob on the lid. The gold handles feature heavy wear - in the areas where the gold has rubbed away over time - a wonderful sign that this was a beloved sugar bowl.
