{HISTORY}

Mysteries abound here, weaving their way between the petals of red and yellow, and blue.

In the Vintage Kitchen. mysteries tend to pop up when it comes to unmarked dishware that carries no specific information as to its own provenance. This pretty platter is one such example. We've searched high and low for a specific maker and pattern name but to no avail. It appears as if this server may be of completely unique and independent spirit, which in such cases leads us to draw our own conclusions as to where and when this vintage beauty may have been made.

A look at the fine details of this specific platter suggests that it was made sometime around the 1930s thanks to its emerald green stripe and its blue, red, and yellow color palette. The unusual shape with its octagon sides and embossed inner striping most closely resembles makers like Nikko and Interpace who modeled similar styles from 1700s-era dish shapes.

At some point in its life, or maybe for its whole entirety, it was kept near a stove or on a stove or above a stove where the heat tanned it over time. It could also have served as a warming plate and spent frequent amounts of time in a temperate oven, keeping a meal yet to be enjoyed.

The perfect size for use as a snack tray or hors d'oeuvres platter, this platter with its heavy weight, comfortably and securely fits a teacup and a sandwich, or two mugs or three wine glasses with a bit of extra room for a nibble or two. We love accommodating pieces like this that can be useful as either a tray or a plate.

We may not know everything about this little wonder but with its aged aesthetic and gorgeous floral swags, we know it's definitely carrying stories of home and history at its heart, and sometimes, that's all that matters.

{CONDITION}

In well-loved vintage condition, this dish has been a part of a zillion meals over the years. There are no chips or cracks, but there are plenty of lovely crazing lines and staining throughout on both sides of the platter. The green stripe around the rim has worn off in some spots. Please see photos.
