{HISTORY}

Gorgeous, in its lazy dazy trail of falling flowers, this vintage dinner plate was made by Nikko in Hakusan, Japan sometime around the mid-20th century. Featuring their Double Phoenix mark which was in production from the 1940s-1970s, Nikko was first founded in 1908, as Nihon Koshitsu Took (NKT). Growing and expanding throughout the early-to mid-20th century, Nikko hit its stride in the 1960s and after when they began opening more factories in New York, Malaysia, and Thailand.  Still in business today, they are a worldwide brand that services both the domestic retail market and the hospitality industry. 

Although this specific pattern name is unknown, it is similar to Nikko's Misty, Royal Pink, and Sweetheart Rose patterns making it a fun piece for vintage mix-and-match ensembles. Featuring a darker red wine shade alongside a deep pink set against a bright white background, this plate is especially pretty for holiday entertaining, Valentine's Day, and summer garden parties. The scalloped edge with raised embossing adds extra decorative detail that catches the light in the most subtle of ways. 

Heavy in composition, weighing in at 1.8 lbs., we thought originally this might be a piece of restaurant ware. Nikko made the dishware for the Essex Hotel in New York City (a different pattern than this one) but beyond that, we couldn't find any more information about other hotel patterns. Exact provenance notwithstanding, this pink rose pattern is timeless, making it a great fit for both antique dishware collections, vintage sets and modern-day aesthetics.

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition. There is one small chip on the backside near the rim that measures 1/4" inch in length and cannot be seen from the front.  When held towards a light source some very light scuffing can be seen (which also suggests restaurant ware use) but is not visible when viewed straight on. The floral pattern is crisp, clear and bright.
