" Scandia... a delightful Swedish style floral pattern..." (from a 1960 newspaper advertisement)

{HISTORY}

Just the kind of floral arrangement that will turn your tabletop into a garden bouquet, this pretty set of vintage midcentury dinner plates was made by Edwin Knowles between the 1950s and 1960s. The pattern is called Scandia and features an array of colorful botanicals in pink, blue, yellow, green, and purple shades with accents of teal, brown and grey.

Hard to find nowadays, this pattern debuted at a time when other potteries were also taking notice of Scandinavian design with its clean lines, bright colors, and nod towards nature. Some potteries created geometric shapes in keeping with the clean lines of Scandinavian furniture. Other potteries made dinnerware in solid colors to match the pastel aesthetic. But Edwin Knowles leaned into the nature element and created this lovely botanical pattern.

With an array of colors to design around, these plates are real inspiration boards for all sorts of summer meals served both indoors and out. When the season is over, hang them on your kitchen wall and your ceramic garden will continue to bloom and brighten your space all winter through.

Of all the American potteries, Edwin Knowles is one of our most favorite here in the Vintage Kitchen. Based in West Virginia from 1900-1963, they made some of the prettiest dish patterns of the 20th century and had an exemplary design eye for color and feminine style.
