Vintage Midcentury Dogwood Luncheon Plates - Set of 6
Legend states that the dogwood's bright white flowers are the result of an accidental tip of a paint bucket from high in the sky as the French pantomime clown, Pierrot, climbed a ladder to brighten up the moon's face with whitewash paint.
{HISTORY}
Nothing brightens up the spring sky like a flowering dogwood tree with its bright white blossoms and vibrant green leaves. In the same way, this vintage set of six midcentury dogwood luncheon plates with their everblooming branches has been lighting up kitchens with year-round beauty and charm for decades.
Containing shades of grey-green, bubblegum pink, chocolate brown, dove grey, butter, and evergreen with branches artistically placed off-center, this pattern was in use by several potteries including Homer Laughlin, American Limoges, and Harker. That's how you know it was a favorite. When one pottery produced a bestselling pattern, other potteries were sure to follow. That also makes it a fun pattern to collect since you can pull from three different potteries to create one big collection in matchy mismatched fashion.
When it comes to the dogwood pattern, slight differences can be found between the potteries, mostly in the shapes of handles on creamers, sugar jars and cups, and on subtle shape changes to platters and additional serving pieces. In order to differentiate themselves ever so slightly, some potteries moved the branches on the plates to the center or featured one large dogwood flower on a cup instead of a cluster. All these fun subtle differences give character and interest to a collection when displayed in a grouping, making this pattern pretty for not only table setting but display too.
Since these six are unmarked, we can't attribute them to a specific pottery, so think of them as the universal go-between to all three potteries. The easy breezy set that's just as happy cozying up to a Homer Laughlin dogwood cup as to a Haker Pottery dogwood platter.
