{HISTORY}

Never underestimate the power of a helpful wash basin pitcher. Large in size (10.5" inches in height) it may have started out life as a water pitcher for personal grooming activities, but today it offers all sorts of helpful purposes when it comes to household use. 

Here In The Vintage Kitchen, we love them best as vases for blooms and branches cut fresh from the garden, but they are also handy helpers for storing long-limbed kitchen and grill utensils, for use as a pretty watering can for indoor and outdoor flower pots, a mixing jar for homemade laundry and soap detergents, and a classic decorative display piece that compliments all types of interiors. 

This one was made by Royal China Co. in Sebring Ohio. It features an all-white color palette with embossed swirls, a plump belly, and a uniquely shaped handle.   Originally, this pitcher would have come with a matching washstand basin bowl, but the beauty of an all white color palette is that it always blends nicely with a variety of mismatched bowls.mIt also looks lovely all on its own. With just the slightest hint of authentic age in the pale tea stain at the spout, the age of this pitcher is unknown, but if we had to guess, we would say that it was made in the 1930s or 1940s, when Royal China Co was just starting out.

First established in 1930, Royal China was always a trendsetter in the industry. In addition to inventing a revolutionary stamping machine, they also had a female founder, a true rarity in the dishware manufacturing industry.  And in the beginning, years, while the Great Depression was challenging businesses across the country, Royal China came up with an inventive plan to hire workers on a delayed payment system so that the pottery could establish a strong foundation without the expense of immediate overhead costs.  This unorthodox practice was intended to give the pottery a leg up in the face of competition and if done right would secure future success and growth for all employees. Luckily, this combination of creative management and faithful employees proved to be a great success.  Eventually, Royal China became the third-largest dishware producer in the country.

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition, this pitcher contains no chips. There is tea-colored staining at the spout, which gives it a lovely aged look. The handle is strong and secure, the glaze is very shiny, and the pitcher is very clean on the inside and out. There is a small stress crack near the bottom of the pitcher. This does not affect the pitcher's ability to hold water and it does not cause it to leak. Please see photos.
