Vintage Johnson Bros Old Britain Castles Red Square Soup Bowl circa 1930s
A DINNER CONVERSATIONALIST'S DREAM PATTERN...
{HISTORY}
We aren't sure if there is a better subject matter for dinner party dishware than the Old Britain Castles pattern by Johnson Bros England. Containing pastoral scenes of the English countryside and all the beautiful buildings that dotted the landscape, each dish in this series featured different settings and different architectural subjects.
This square soup bowl features a scene from the City of Exeter as depicted in 1792. Located along the winding River Exe, Exeter Castle (also known as Rougemont Castle) can be seen here along with other village buildings and a variety of different types of trees and shrubs. Edged in a floral lace pattern, there is a lot of detail in this bowl and given its lovely square shape it can easily double as a candy dish, small serving bowl, or display piece.
Made in Stoke-on-Trent, England in the 1930s, this bowl was part of the first wave of production in the Old Britain Castles series. Debuting in 1930, it became so popular in the American market, it was continually produced up until 2003.
Available in several other shades including blue, pink, orchid (lavender), black, and brown this lovely shade of red looks especially gorgeous when incorporated into Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentine's Day tablescapes. With its scalloped edge, decorated rim, and pastoral scene, this bowl looks especially stunning when paired with other red and white vintage and antique dishware.
