Vintage Johnson Bros Marquis Windsor Ware Platter circa 1940s-1950s
{HISTORY}
Made in England by Johnson Brothers between the 1940s and the 1960s, this platter features the colorful hand-painted Marquis pattern full of autumn shades and fall garden festivity. Part of their Windsor Ware series, it contains a gadroon style edge, and three big swags of cottage flowers in shades of pink, green, sunflower, plum, blueberry and chocolate.
Beautifully aged with light staining and lots of delicate crazing, this platter carries 80 years of collecting in its winsome appearance. A unique combination of flowers and colors, it navigates each season beautifully but looks especially captivating in autumn thanks to its warm and earthy color palette. A pretty break from the season's traditional displays of pumpkins, pine cones, corn, straw and autumn foliage, this platter highlights fall fever for the flower-loving kind and mind, making it a dreamy alternative when it comes to interior decorating and tablescape design.
Amply sized (14" inches in length) to fit a large chicken with roasted potatoes or assorted vegetables tucked all the way around, the Marquis pattern platters came in a bevy of sizes that ranged from a petite 10" inches all the way up to 17"inches. Hard to find these days in the Marquis pattern in all the platter sizes, it's exciting to see this one in the shop, especially because it's filled with such aged character. It's a true gift from the past ready to revel in a brand-new future.
