Vintage Johnson Bros Harvest Windsor Ware Dinner Plates - Set of Four circa 1960-1965
You and the whole family will welcome the handsome beauty that Johnson Bros windsor ware adds to any meal... (from a 1962 newspaper advertisement)
Made in England between 1960-1965, these absolutely gorgeous Johnson Bros dinnerplates feature the Harvest pattern - a stunning choice for the holiday table. Hand-colored and highly detailed, these plates were part of Johnson Bros. Windsor Ware series and feature a drawing of Windsor Castle on the backstamp.
Containing autumn orchard fruits... pears, pomegranates, grapes, and plums alongside mums, pink roses, and blue wax flowers all centered around a chocolate brown floral rim, there are enough colors in this pattern to spark creativity in any decorator. Hues include grape, eggplant, sage, mint, avocado, teal, russet, pale gold, mustard, brick, nutmeg, pale raspberry, sky blue, butter yellow, chocolate, and emerald green.
Each plate was hand-colored by a ceramic decorator and brushed with their specific mark on the back. This is always such a nice personal touch to see on dishware since it's a sign of acknowledgment that an artist worked on each piece by hand like a painting and also it guarantees that no two plates are ever painted exactly the same. Little details like this are what tablescapes extra special and extra personal.
Johnson Brothers was the largest producer of dishware in the bustling pottery hub of Stoke-On-Trent and they had particular skill in making dishes that appealed to American sensibilities. We can't trace the complete adventures of this set, but we do they traveled from England to the Pacific Northwest and then on to New England during the 60-year journey. It's fun to imagine how many Thanksgiving tables these four were a part of between the 1960s and now. Just imagine all those turkey dinners, all that lively conversation, and all that festive merriment.
