VINTAGE J & G MEAKIN CLASSIC WHITE GARLAND GOLD SQUARE DESSERT PLATES -SET OF TWO CIRCA 1960S
{HISTORY}
If there was ever a success story about a pottery that lasted its entire length it would be the J & G Meakin Pottery of England. Started by two brothers, James and George in England in 1851, the Meakin pottery was a success from day one. Credited with having a keen understanding of both the English market and the American market, the brothers securely positioned themselves in the export business by setting up an American office, studying the needs and desires of American consumers, and making dishware back in England that would appeal to American sensibilities. For 100 years they produced dishware that they were confident in, they treated their employees well, gave back to their English community, and successfully navigated a century's worth of good business practice.
In the 1960s, just a decade before they merged with Wedgwood China, J & G Meakin produced this pattern called Garland Gold. It was a spin-off of their Classic White pattern but this one differed in that it included a wreath of gold leaves and gold edging around the rim.
These two square dessert plates in the Garland Gold pattern feature a beautiful scalloped edge and a fluted rim along with a pretty floral wreath in the center for a little extra shimmer. The Garland Gold pattern offered two distinct shapes when it came to dessert plates - square and round - which is a nice aesthetic change of perspective if you have a complete set of this pattern and also offers loads of mix and match potential.
