{HISTORY}

Incredibly beautiful, this vintage paper mache box was handmade and painted by a series of talented artists in Kashmir. The size of a small loaf of bread this box has a rounded dome lid and a rectangular storage shape inside. 

An art form that goes back centuries, typically it takes several skilled craftsmen to make just one box. The box itself is first handmade from forms and then passed to a series of decorators who handpaint designs on the tops and sides of each box. The decorating component alone can take up to a week to paint depending on the intricacy of the design and each painting is unique. 

This box contains a gorgeous bird and botanical pattern with bright red, green and yellow flowers. From every angle, it is a stunning work of art. Outlined in shimmery gold paint, each detail of the design is interesting. The birds, unless you are looking for them almost disappear into the background while the red flowers seem to float to the surface making the whole scene seem multi-dimensional. 

Inside, a simple coating of black lacquer, shiny and bright, covers both the top and bottom interior as well as the exterior bottom. Just lovely for holding onto all the little treasures of the day, these boxes are useful for all sorts of different tasks. In the kitchen, we love them for holding onto spare change, jewelry, notepaper, strings, storage bands or cocktail accessories, but you'll soon discover a whole new set of purposes that makes this box not only a delight to look at but also a handy helper.

{CONDITION}

In beautiful vintage condition. There are chips or cracks in the box. The lacquer on the interior base and lid has crackled a little bit due to age. The exterior is in beautiful condition with bright colors and a shiny glaze. Please see photos.
