Vintage Hall's Orange Poppy Bean Pot Crock circa 1933-1953
{HISTORY}
As bright and colorful as the day it was made, this vintage bean pot crock was made by Hall China Company in the 1930s. Popular for the next twenty years, this Orange Poppy pattern could be found on a wide range of kitchenware pieces including mixing bowls, bakeware, canisters, casseroles, teapots, and dinnerware - a veritable flower field of graceful beauty floating in and around cook spaces across the country.
As far as utilitarian function goes, there's nothing more practical than a pot like this one when it comes to cooking one of New England's most favorite foods... baked beans. With a heavy, crock-style composition and a removable lid that came with a built-in steam release hole and a recessed knob, this pot easily fit between racks in the oven - a helpful, easy-to-work-with cooker for the most traditional of cool weather comforts.
First started by Robert Hall, Sr. in East Liverpool Ohio in 1903, the Hall China Company started out selling mostly sanitaryware but by the 1920s had become the leader in manufacturing a range of kitchenware. Mastering an ancient, but practically forgotten single-fired process that reduced crazing, which resulted in a more durable product, Hall China quickly became well-known for their unique designs and high-quality craftsmanship that consistently held up well over time and use.
Dependable, reliable, and attractive, Hall's decorated kitchenware and novelty teapots took center stage during the 1930s. When Orange Poppy debuted in 1933, Hall was entering its halcyon days, employing the best artisans and managerial teams in the business and engaging with the latest technologies. Further expansion led them to become the first pottery in the US to use only tunnel-style kilns, which sped up the manufacturing process.
It's no wonder that during that time, the Orange Poppy pattern emerged. Often associated with positive energy, robust zeal, and unbridled enthusiasm, orange poppies in the language of flowers have always been a cheerful addition to the kitchen. They bring just the right kind of joy you want to surround yourself with as you cook your way through the day, the week, the year with your own level of unbridled enthusiasm.
