{HISTORY}

Classic in stature and size,  this hefty all white restaurant ware gravy boat was made by Hall China in East Liverpool, Ohio. With an embossed design near the handle, often referred to as a knotted rope, a wheat sprig, or a saber sword, this emblem also appeared on dishware made by Shenango for the United States Quartermaster Corps.

Since USQMC was at its largest and busiest during World War II, we'd like to assume, based on the shared design, that Hall also stepped in to serve this sector of the military too. It wasn't unusual for several restaurant ware manufacturers to serve the same commercial customers, especially during wartime when everyone was pressed into helping in any way possible.

First established in 1776, the USQMC branch of the United States Army coordinates and supports many different tasks within the Army including food service. Although their role has changed over the course of 200 years, quartermasters have always acted as support teams for other areas of the branch. But since the early 1900s, it has been the quartermaster's job to order and coordinate delivery of food supplies and equipment to Army commissaries as well as figure out how to feed soldiers during wartime combat.

Fitting for an adventuresome time period, this gravy boat has seen its adventures in the kitchen too, A series of dark spots at the bottom of the boat's interior may make it not the best server for gravy service now, but it's still delightfully functional for a host of possibilities including as a dish for nuts waiting to be cracked, for fresh flower bouquets, and for decorative seasonal displays like pine cones, balsam boughs and berries, Christmas ornaments, and succulents.
