This beautiful vintage print of a still-life painting by H. S. Berg (1883-1981) features a potted geranium plant in vibrant shades of tomato red. H.S. stands for Huibert Schallenberg, a well-known Dutch artist who made a lifelong career of painting botanicals, landscapes, still life portraits, and maritime scenes.

Highly acclaimed and most well-known for his floral portraiture,  Huibert's ability to capture the natural essence and simplicity of a flower using bold colors and simple settings caught the attention of many art admirers over the course of his long career. Described as a kind and gentle man, his second wife Lien, was the promoter behind his work, making sure that his beautiful paintings were seen by art dealers and collectors throughout his lifetime. 

Over the course of his career, time and again, Huibert would return to his beloved geranium subject, painting these colorful plants in a variety of different settings and situations. This one features a backdrop of earthy shades that illuminates the vibrant pop of color expressed by the red petals. Timeless in subject matter and gorgeous in color palette, this print was beautifully reproduced by Edition Stehli in Switzerland around the 1930s/1940s era.

{CONDITION}

In absolutely lovely vintage condition. The print itself is bright, clear, and clean with crisp details. So clear in fact, it almost looks like an original painting. There is some staining along the white matted part at the top center on front, glue spots on back where it was previously affixed to mat board and also six nail holes (one at each corner and two on the sides) where it was secured to a frame. If you chose to have this print framed all of those details would be easily covered.
