{HISTORY}

This vintage pottery planter with its long shape, thumbprint style arches, and thin pinstripes has a simple, stylish vibe and a very interesting history. Made in America for the New England floral nursery A.N. Pierson, this planter was once a part of the repertoire of the largest commercial rose grower in the country.

Founded by Swedish immigrant Andrew Pierson in Cromwell, CT in 1870, A.N. Pierson quickly grew to become a very successful nursery in the late 1800s that supplied major metropolitan cities including Boston, New York City, and Washington DC with wholesale and retail floral needs. Never straying far from his Swedish roots, Andrew employed immigrants from his home country, built houses for them near the nursery, and passed his business down through four generations of his family before it, unfortunately, closed due to bankruptcy in the early 1990s.

Known as the Rose King of America, in a city referred to as Rosetown thanks to Andrew, A.N. Pierson made a big impact on his small community both in the plant business and the city's architecture, which still stands today, 120 years later.

It's fun to imagine this planter overflowing with bouquets of roses in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Its lovely apple green color is bright and vibrant and its Scandinavian design always stylish no matter what the era. Now a hard-to-find pottery piece, this is also a great example of Scandinavian design and entrepreneurial spirit in America.
