{HISTORY}

Made by Shenango China in New Castle, PA between the 1930s-1940s, this pair of vintage restaurant ware cereal bowls feature a teal and beige color palette with floral swags and dots. While this pattern is hard to find among vintage restaurant ware nowadays, we do know that it came in other color variations too including black, blue, red, and green.

The red version was the favored shade for Pierre's in New York City, a continental restaurant whose house specialty was lobster bisque from the 1920s -1950s. The green version was found at The Green Lantern Inn, a boarding house, tavern, special events venue and restaurant in Fairport, NY that operated between 1925-2014.

These bowls, although sharing the same pattern as those two establishments above contain a slight variation beyond their teal trim. The clay is a soft cream color as opposed to the more traditional bright white often seen on vintage restaurant ware. Not quite as dark as the tan of Shenango's Incaware line, these bowls are really pretty and very unique in an already hard-to-find pattern.

Collecting vintage restaurant ware is always such an interesting adventure in history and dining. While we may never know the specific story of where these bowls were in service, it is fun to think that they've traveled through almost 100 years of time.  As the jet-setters of the dishware world, they could be found in all the fun hotspots around the country from hotels to hospitality venues, cafeterias to cafes, dining rooms to dance halls.

More often than not, where there was restaurant ware there was conviviality in the air (and at the table).
