Vintage Fruit Cake Tin - Manor Texas Baking Company for Merico Inc. Grocery - 1960s Storage Tin
Many people feel that fruitcakes improve greatly with age. When they are well saturated with alcoholic liquors, which raise the spirits and keep down mold, and are buried in powdered sugar in tightly closed tins, they have been enjoyed as long as 25 years after baking. Irma Rombauer, The Joy of Cooking
Generally, there are two sides of camp when it comes to fruitcake enthusiasts - those who love it and those who loathe it. Either way, here, you have the best of both worlds wrapped up in this vintage tin. If you love it, then you have a reminder and possibly a container for your favorite fruit cake. If you loathe it, then you have a pretty vessel for other types of sweet treats or a pretty storage tin for your kitchen essentials.
The Manor Texas Baking Company was a state favorite in mid-20th century Texas. Bakers of all sorts of confections from bear claws to pies to bread, they offered a home delivery service which was met with great anticipation by local residents. Packaged in pretty tins, especially festive for gift giving, their fruitcakes came in a variety of sizes from small to large. This tin was their 5lb cake size - a hearty dessert for hearty appetites!
The state flower decorates the top of the tin while the sides offer a panoramic history of the state making it fun collector's item for food enthusiasts as well as history lovers. Another interesting aspect to this tin is the ingredient list - which makes no reference to alcohol but plenty to preservatives - a vast land of possibility in the 1960's. The Manor Texas Baking Company closed its doors at some point in the 60's, but there is another Texas bakery company that makes Texas Manor fruitcake currently. The switch of the names might mean they are the same recipe but now operating under a different parent company. More investigation on that to come!
