A cloth can be a cloth, absolutely, but it can also be so much more. Take this vintage one for example. With its floral embroidery, its colorful design, its size, and its multiple types of stitchwork it is not just a cloth. It is a storyteller. Of a sewer, of a skill, of a place and time. This cloth gives us a peek into the past via needle and thread. Let's look...

The sewer, who was quite skilled in the art of embroidery, handstitched this magnificent pattern onto white cotton fabric using multiple types of embroidery stitches. Arranged in a symmetrical pattern utilizing all four corners and a variety of different shapes along the edge, this design was no small feat to accomplish. Sized at 32x34, it most likely was made for a card tabletop or an occasional table to keep the table underneath it clean and the room bright and colorful. 

Imagine the mid-century ladies coming over for tea or a game of bridge in the afternoon. Imagine a salt air cottage with a kitchen table view that looks out to the sea. Imagine a country farmhouse with weekly wash on the line, and this lovely linen flapping in the breeze. These are all possibilities about where and how such a pretty linen like this could have spent its days. We will never know its exact origin or the lovely sewer behind it, but it does offer the beginning sentences of a story, that can ignite your imagination not in words but in stitches.
