Vintage Copper Jam Pot
{HISTORY}
Wonderfully heavy and bright, this vintage copper jam pot has been whipping up fruit-flavored desserts, jams and jellies for decades. Although unmarked as to maker or manufacturer, we suspect that it may have been made in Portugal by Metalutil, a stunning example of the classic style jam pot beloved by cooks around the world.
For all it lacks in the way of maker identity it more than makes up for in story. This pot came from the country kitchen of a prolific Southern baker/folk artist, who was not only a creative home cook but also a professional freelance cake decorator from the 1950s-1980s.
The pride of many Southern kitchens, homemade jams, jellies, and preserves are true cultural superstars and the backbone of Southern hospitality. You'd be hard-pressed not to meet a cook down South who didn't have his or her own signature recipe for fig jam or peach preserves tucked away in their larder. Showcasing all that good cheer and neighborly conviviality was this pot, representing hundreds of jars of sweet and savory preserved fruits and decadent desserts,
There's truth to the notion that a pot takes on its own seasoning year after year, decade after decade, imparting all those individual cooking adventures into the collective flavor of the finished product. This one may be shiny and bright, but don't let that fool you into thinking that it hung lonely and unloved from its hook above the stove. It was part of all sorts of festivity in the kitchen, mixing up a million hours of cheerful kitchen work spent enthusiastically at the stove. These adventures left unique marks of character found in the darkened speckles around the outside of the pot and on the handles. Vintage hallmarks of the best kind, seasoned with joy, this pot is now ready to be passed onto the next generation of jam and jelly makers.
