Here they are! Meet the Starbird family of 18th-century Boston, MA.

Primrose Starbird is one of Boston's most sought-after bakers. She supplies her neighborhood mercantile with freshly made cakes, breads, and pies. Her bestseller is a pastry stuffed with custard, mint, and marigold petals, a recipe that was passed down from her English ancestors. Theory, her husband, is a cartographer working out of a small shop on Post Road. Mercy likes to tag along with her dad when he's mapping out the coastline towns along the Cape. A born naturalist, she is a keen observer of the flora and fauna found on New England's beaches and collects seashells of all size and shape for her brother. An inspiring inventor and an avid bookworm just like his idol Benjamin Franklin, when Phineas is not reading you can find him working out his rudimentary ideas for a water purification system made entirely out of materials that Mercy brings home from the beach. A good day at the Starbird house begins and ends with Primrose and one of her pies  - preferably Theory's favorite - the pork pie studded with herbs and served with homemade gravy. 

That of course is a completely made-up story inspired by this vintage colonial paper doll family designed by Betty Campbell in the mid-1990s for Shackman & Company, a New York City-based card and novelty company founded in 1898. Maybe you'll see this family in a whole different way and be equally inspired to dream up your own story about them or create a little world of words in which they live and work and play. That's the fun of paper dolls - story starters from the first outfit change to the last. 

Die cut on heavy card stock, this family of four features two outfits each along with coordinating hats and a wig for dad. Full of color and offering loads of playful creativity, each doll has the option of laying flat or standing upright on the included paper bases. 

Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we think this family is so fun for keeping little ones entertained at the kids' table during the holidays.  But really they are a joy for all ages. too. Incorporate them into your party decor as signage holders, dazzle your guests with a little after-dinner paper theater show or fashion them into your Thanksgiving decor alongside pumpkins,  fall flowers, and maybe a pie or two. Primrose would be so pleased!
