Hens on nests!

Such a classic farmhouse companion, this pretty hen was handpainted in the 1970s with just a simple pop of red on her head. Inside, dish possibilities await as to what can be stored there.

Originally, this mama bird was most likely intended for use as a candy dish, but here in the Vintage Kitchen, we love to utilize dishes like this for treats for the entire family - pets, people, backyard birdies - anyone who could use a touch of extra love and attention during their day. 

Throughout the 20th century hens on nest came in all sorts of variations with personalities all their own. Some are made of milk glass, some of wire. Some of porcelain, some of tin. Some are painted in exuberant colors and loads of extra detailing and others are simple and understated for a minimalist effect and a go-with-anything aesthetic. This hen is marked with its painter's initials - BWS - who used a blank mold to create this quietly expressive little character in 1979, We don't know who this BSW was, but their artistic skills are a delight. They painted this hen with just enough color to give her good and noble character. 

Treats aside, dishes like this also, make great holders for bar soap, kitchen sponges, keys, change, recipes cards, seed packets - anything that tends to get messy on the counter if left unattended.

In lovely vintage condition. Therea re no chips or cracks except for the light surface chip on the hen's beak. Please see photos.
