Vintage Ceramic Coasters with French Botanicals - Tuileries by Toscany circa 1977
Inspired by the royal servings at Tuileries, the old palace of the French Kings in Paris... (from a 1977 Toscany advertisement)
{HISTORY}
Debuting just before the holiday season in 1977, this set of ceramic coasters was part of a series of French-inspired dishware called Tuileries made by Toscany in Japan. Colorful, elegant, and artistically designed the Tuileries series also included cake plates, mugs, and snack sets - a veritable garden bouquet that was always in bloom when it came to the kitchen.
Inspired by the real-life Jardin de Tuileries, a city garden located near the Louvre in Paris, this famous gathering spot has been a favorite of tourists and locals since the 16th century. Included here are two photos taken recently in the park. Visitors to the city will also know this garden as the location of the giant ferris wheel in the winter months.
Originally these coasters came in a set of six, but somewhere along the way one separated from the batch, so this set contains just five coasters. Deep enough to moonlight as prep dishes for kitchen spices and herbs while cooking, these little charmers offer many uses outside of their traditional function.
Incorporate them into your cocktail snack set and they turn into pretty little servers for olives, bar nuts or any small nibble that pairs well with a drink. Add them to your table settings to hold personal servings of lemon wedges or pickles, butter pats or seasonings. Or simply enjoy them as intended - delightful little Parisian-inspired drink coasters to keep your tabletop surfaces clean and water ring free.
