{HISTORY}

Bounding its way through time, this equestrian horse print contains four centuries of history and three art forms in its handsome presentation.

First, there is the art of fox hunting at Quorn, an annual English countryside hunt that has been a tradition since 1696 in Leicestershire, England. Next, there is the art of illustration. This scene was captured by well-known sporting artist Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851) who painted a series of energetic vignettes at the Quorn Hunt in 1835. This one is titled "Snob Is Beat." Thirdly, there is the art of printmaking. This particular print was made in Germany in 1960 in large format folio size for the Societe Nouvelle des Editions du Chene in Paris.

Beautifully reproduced on textured paper with bright colors and crisp detailing, this art print captures all the elegance of an Autumn day spent among horse and hounds. A handsome addition to your space, we are particularly fond of prints like these in the bar cart area as the colors in the landscape compliment all the woodsy, dark shades of whiskey and red wine, brandy, and rum.

Henry was born to an artistic family of painters in Westminster, England. He began his career as a miniaturist but eventually settled on large sporting scenes as a favorite genre. Prolific throughout his life, he also passed on his painting talents to two of his children continuing a long line of artistic merit within the Alken family. His portrait, sketched by Walter Gibley, is included here for historical interest.
