{HISTORY}

With their playful patterns and geometric designs, there's no denying the charm of vintage feed and flour sacks. These two carry a blue and white theme with dynamic circles and squares, crescent moons, and two helpers in the kitchen washing and drying dishes. Given their whimsical patterns, these two fabrics are especially fun for kid's clothing, blankets, toys, and room decor as well as kitchen linens.

Dating to the 1930s and 1940s era, these two fabric bags originally held household pantry staples such as flour, sugar, rice, beans, and grains. Part of a marketing collaboration between food manufacturers and consumers, colorful fabric sacks that served as merchandise packaging  filled a need during challenging economic times brought on by the Great Depression and WWII, when supplies were scarce, and thriftiness was an art form.

Transformed into a wealth of everyday items, these cotton fabric sacks were repurposed into clothing, aprons, quilts, curtains, toys, table linens, and practically everything else in between. In those lean economic times, there was no underestimating the creativity of early 20th-century sewing enthusiasts, especially when it came to repurposing fabric into useful household items.

In lovely vintage condition, these are in their original full sack form, which means they are stitched into a bag shape that is enclosed on three sides with an open end on the 4th side, like a pillowcase.

The fabric containing the girls washing dishes dates to the 1930s and was later reproduced by fabric designer Robert Kaufman. Colors include cornflower blue and bright white. The fabric containing the circls and rectangles has zippy midcentury-mod style and contains a baby blue, bright white, mocha, and black color palette.

So cute for a host of sewing projects, clothing repair, and artistic creativity, we can't wait to hear all about what you make with your new vintage fabric.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

  • Sold individually
  • Original, uncut sack shape
  • Unique designs

{CONDITION}

Each fabric is in lovely vintage condition. The smaller sack featuring the rectangles and crescent moons is flaw-free with no spots, stains, holes, or rips. The larger fabric with the girls washing and drying dishes contains two tiny threadbare areas in the bottom rounded corner and a very light, tiny rust stain about halfway down the sack near the edge. Please see photos. Both of these flaws measure 1/4" inch in length or less. The threadbare areas can be covered over by a hem if you decide to remove the original stitching and lay the fabric out in one flat piece. The fabric is very clean and bright, and the colors are vibrant.

{SIZE}

Sack # 1 measures 25" inches (length) x 12.25" inches (width)

Sack #2  measures 36" inches  (length) x 21" inches (width)
