{HISTORY}

The star of the show in kitchens of the 1930s, this vintage Hazel Atlas Strong-Shoulder Mason jar was just the thing you needed for your pantry storage. With its large capacity - 10 cups (also known as 2.5 quarts) and its zinc porcelain-lined lid, it was the ideal container for all sorts of dry goods from beans to rice and everything in between.

Also called an Atlas Round Mason Jar, this strong-shoulder style referred to the extra lip just underneath the screw-top threads. This lip offered a nice grip at the neck when picking up heavier jars making it more secure in your hands than just a smooth ribbon of glass running down the sides. Made from the 1910s -1950s, Atlas strong-shoulder jars became a beloved favorite in cook spaces around the country.

Strong shoulders aside, the zinc lid was its own focal point of fascination too. A big food-saving improvement, it was lined with Boyd's Genuine Porcelain Lined Cap, which was a glass insert installed in the lid that was actually made out of milk glass, not porcelain. Having the jar "seal" with this extra layer of glass eliminated the metallic taste that could leach into the jar from just a regular zinc screwtop style lid. That meant fresheer-tasting food and happier eaters.

Just the kind of helpful worker that was needed during the Great Depression years, whem times were trying enough, these strong shoulder jars helped provide some reassurance that if the world was crazy outside, at least inside, your kitchen was clean and tidy, thanks to Atlas.
