Vintage A.N. Pierson Large Beehive Style Planter in Honey Brown
LESS, BUT BETTER. DIETER RAMS
{HISTORY}
Honey gold in color, this simple vintage beehive style planter with its graduated stripes and deep well was made in America for the New England floral nursery A.N. Pierson, one of the largest commercial rose growers in the country.
Founded by Swedish immigrant Andrew Pierson (1850- 1925) in Cromwell, Connecticut in 1872,, A.N. Pierson quickly grew to become a very successful nursery in the late 1800s that supplied major metropolitan cities including Boston, New York City, and Washington DC with wholesale and retail floral needs. Never straying far from his Swedish roots, Andrew employed immigrants from his home country, built houses for them near the nursery, and passed his business down through four generations of his family before it, unfortunately, closed due to bankruptcy in the early 1990s.
Known as the Rose King of America, in a city referred to as Rosetown, thanks to Andrew and his nursery, A.N. Pierson made a big impact on his small community both in the plant business and the city's architecture, which still stands today, 120 years later.
It's fun to imagine this planter overflowing with bouquets of roses in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but A.N. Pierson in addition to roses also sold lots of other types of flowers and plants, so anything from succulents to house plants to herbs and topiaries would look lovely in this planter. Thanks to its simple design, it offers a timeless aesthetic and stylish Scandinavian sensibility.
Despite the nursery's size and reputation, A.N. Pierson planter pots are hard to find these days, making this one not only a great example of Swedish design but also Scandinavian entrepreneurial spirit in America.
