{HISTORY}

Debuting in 1975, just one year before the US celebrated its bicentennial, this Liberty Blue cup and saucer was made by Wedgwood & Co in Staffordshire England. Part of Wedgwood's Colonial Scenes of America series that was commissioned by the US-based Benjamin Franklin Savings and Loan, this pattern was part of a promotional incentive for new account holders at Benjamin Franklin.

Depicting scenes from America's early colonial history, Liberty Blue became such a favorite among dishware buyers that grocery stores across the country also began offering it once the promotion ended at Benjamin Franklin Savings and Loan. George Washington, Betsy Ross and Paul Revere were a few of the figures depicted in detailed scenes of 18th-century American history along with pivotal places like Mount Vernon, Independence Hall and Valley Forge.

Although newly made in 1975, the patterns ironically were based on etchings made during the American Revolution in 1780 by Staffordshire potters. At the time, the potters were testing out new innovations in dishware manufacture that allowed highly detailed images to be transferred to dishes while retaining the crisp, clear and dynamic lines, color and imagery of the original etchings.  The color palette they worked with at the time was blue and white. Fast forward 200 years later, and the Staffordshire potters were back at it, making these same blue and white scenes for a new generation of American collectors just in time to celebrate the country's 200-year independence from England.

This cup and saucer features Paul Revere and his ride through the streets of Boston as well as the Old North Church  -  the first place Paul Revere stopped to warn Bostonians that British soldiers were enroute.

The cup features Paul on his horse on both sides of the cup along with a beautiful floral bouquet between the two. The saucer features the elegant Old North Church tucked between trees and colonial buildings. The repeating floral bouquet around the rim is the same that appears on the cup.

The really lovely thing about Staffordshire blue and white dishware is how beautiful all patterns look together regardless of their theme. A classic style in kitchens of all ages, no matter what the decade or the century for that matter, blue and white dishware always looks crisp, clean, and stylish in displays and on the table.
