Vintage 1970s American Airlines Square First Class Serving Dishes by Pfaltzgraff 73 D1 38
{HISTORY}
There is no denying the distinct pleasure of first class air travel back in the 1970s and 1980s when airlines went out of their way to make it flying a memorable experience. That was in the golden age of air travel when people dressed up for flights, sipped complementary champagne on take off, and indulged in all sorts of amenities way beyond the peanut and pretzel snack packs served today.
These two square ceramic plates were part of the experience of multi-course food service. Made by Pfaltzgraff in 1973 for American Airlines, they were part of a typical dining tray that included other companion pieces of different sizes and shapes that made up a complete meal for each first-class traveler. There were small round dishes for butter, oblong shapes for flatware, oval shapes for main entrees, rectangles for rolls, bowls for soup... you name it. Whatever was on the menu, an appropriately sized Pfaltzgraff dish was on the tray.
In the early 1970s, when these twoplates were in service lots of exciting things were happening on the American Airlines front. The job of flight attendant had just crossed the equality line and was was no longer considered a profession for women, but for men too. In flight movie screens were placed every five rows in coach, and every three rows in first class giving travelers a better view of in-flight entertainment. And the new AA LuxuryLiner offered a living room-style lounge inside the airplane complete with lamps, side tables, swivel chairs, game tables, specialized menus, and a fully-stocked serve-yourself cocktail bar.
These two might no longer being the flying amongst the clouds, but that doesn't mean they aren't enjoying a new type of fun on the ground. Sized at 5.75" inches in length and width, they are wonderful serving pieces for all sorts of foods from snacks to sides and everything in-between. We like them best when paired with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a jetset story - something rambling and rollicking, funny and fascinating, engaging and entertaining as only the experiences of the best travel adventures can be.
These two are no wallflowers, they love good company, unique dining experiences, and busy (tray) tables.
