When it comes to craft time and inspiring a little bit of imagination, creativity and ingenuity, nothing is more fun than a vintage arts and crafts book. Here in these pages, readers will find 146 midcentury projects, carefully selected by Esther Bjoland of the Standard Education Society. Intended to offer something for every age level, classic projects like how to make a kite, a pinwheel, paper mache animals and an assortment of Christmas ornaments mingle with more clever undertakings like making cat drawings out of pussywillows, a tent out of dried grass, shoes out of felt, a city building out of boxes and hanging lanterns made of paper. Almost all the projects are intended not only to be made once, but played with numerous times after, so for your budding artist this book is a literal playground of neverending fun.
In the forward, Esther is quick to point out that these activities do not require much, if any, expense and can be executed with everyday ordinary things around the house. Paper, cardboard, scissors, thread, glue, crayons, etc. are just the tools needed to spark the imagination and entertain kids for an hour, for an afternoon, or for a whole day, while also building confidence and independence. Certain projects require kids to be outdoors versus indoors, which creates further opportunities for additional play and potential.
