Vintage 1950s Mayer Restaurant Ware Small Platter - Tropic Pattern - True Ivory
Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night. Edgar Allan Poe
{HISTORY}
Who's ready to visit the tropics via your kitchen?! That's the type of magic carpet ride that vintage restaurant ware provides all without leaving the comfort of your house.
This petite vintage platter was made by Mayer China in the 1950s and features their colorful Tropic pattern. Based in Beaver Falls PA, Mayer China was started by two brothers in 1881. They made dishware for all sorts of commercial eating establishments from mom and pop restaurants to cruise ships, airlines to train lines, big city hotels to small city diners, and everything in between, including the military.
It would be wonderful to know which commercial enterprise the Tropic pattern was made for. It could have been a warm-weather hotel or a beach-front restaurant, or maybe even a marina that served up snacks and sidecars along with a seagull view. Maybe it was for a cruise ship that floated around the lower hemisphere or a member of the dish brigade on a dinner boat serving up nautical food and flair.
But since there is no monogram or icon or any sort of definitive reference that points to something specific, we can only imagine what sort of life it must have had previously traveling around the restaurant world with 1950s joie de vivre. That's the fun of restaurant ware, it's a plate and a pattern and a daydream all rolled into one.
Petite in size this mini platter measures 10.5" inches in length making it a wonderful shared plate between two eaters or an ample side dish server for the whole table. Especially attractive for serving green vegetables thanks to its color palette, this platter would also look lovely piled high with blueberry studded foods, salmon or slices of ham and pineapple. With a platter as pretty as this one, it's fun to match your food to dishware!
