Vintage 1940s Universal Potteries Oven Proof Garden Glory Refrigerator Jar - Small Size
Bigger than a custard cup, smaller than a souffle dish this vintage refrigerator jar was just the thing you needed to store petite leftovers in your 1940s fridge. Made by Univeral Potteries in Cambridge, Ohio this jar features the Garden Glory pattern with red, blue and yellow flowers and it came in two styles - one with a red and one with a blue stripe.
Originally, this jar came in a set of three in stackable graduated sizes, each with a matching lid. Over time, this jar became separated from its mates and its lid, so now it arrives here in the kitchen of the 2020s, a solo spokesperson for a splendid 80-year-old kitchen aesthetic.
Once a part of a pattern that came in just about every kitchen accessory you'd ever need, the Garden Glory pattern created a cheerful indoor garden year-round. The refrigerator jars were part of Universal's oven-proof line which meant that they could go directly from fridge to oven to table in one felt swoop and back again. This was not only a time saver in the 1940s kitchen but also a space saver. It eliminated extra dishes and extra dishwashing and they could be stacked and stored neatly in the fridge or nested in the cupboard.
Hard to find these days, we love this jar's cute little shape and pretty flowers. Even though it's missing its lid we can still think of all sorts of ways to incorporate this into your kitchen decor. From storage organizers to utensil displays to table centerpieces, this little charmer will add a cheerful splash of vintage joy wherever you find a place for it.
