There's a Cosco stool for every purpose... (from a 1948 Cosco ad campaign)

{HISTORY}

"Step stools... at once a handy ladder and a restful seat," so continued the aforementioned Cosco ad campaign.

Handy Indeed! In the 1940s, this is how you conquered efficiency in your kitchen. Made by Cosco Industries, this vintage metal marvel is both a chair and a step ladder all in one. Maximizing space, it was ideal for small rooms and multiple purposes. Whether you were chopping vegetables at the counter and needed a comfortable chair with a footrest to give your back a break or you were zipping around the house cleaning and organizing shelves and cupboards way up high, this pal helped you in all endeavors when it came to cooking and cleaning. 

Known as the 4-D model, and very stylish yet utilitarian by design, its unfussy metal construction was easy to clean and strong in durability. Folding inside itself in a retractable manner, it was tidy and useful as a chair but fully extended, it solved both seating and reaching situations. 

Nowadays still fully functional and great for small spaces, this cute charmer makes a lovely helper for other purposes too. Part storage shelf, part plant stand, part chair, part stool, part whimsical art, it still 80 years later, has so much to offer.

While this one has traveled the past eight decades very well, it has undergone some paint changes during its journey. Originally it started out a tomato red shade (see underside photo with the cosco label), then a previous owner painted it royal blue, and then finally it was painted a dark chocolate brown with a hint of burgundy. Maybe you'll want to paint it something out else too - to match your space or bring it back to its original red. Either way, it's ready for your artistic eye.

{CONDITION}

Mostly universal in its chocolate brown paint job, there are some places on (aka the  previous paint colors. Apart from the paint changes, this chair/ladder is in great original shape. The steps easily unfold to their outstretched position. The treads bear a little bit of chippiness (please see photos) but thanks to the repaintings, these are smooth chips that have been painted over and nothing that is in danger of flaking off. The chair while almost completely level, does bear one leg that is slightly higher in the air giving it the slightest of wobbles.  Please see photos.
