{HISTORY}

This vintage floral gravy boat tells the story of two big American icons- the maker, Homer Laughlin, and the distributor - the local five and dime shop. One of the best-known pottery brands in the United States, Homer Laughlin first introduced their Rhythm shape in the 1940s. They created numerous designs within this shape to fit the sleek new style of dishware, which was a little bit more modern than the frilly, formal designs of the 1920s and 1930s. One of the patterns designed for the Rhythm shape was this White Flower imagery. Artistic, classic, and highly detailed like a botanical painting, this white flower pattern brought a fresh, vibrant, and natural aesthetic to the tables and kitchens of 1940s and 1950s America.

Sold through five and dime stores like Woolworth's and JJ Newberry's until the late 1950's, this Rhythm line was economical, stylish and accessible. Now, these white and green florals are a bit of a harder pattern to find, so its always fun when a Rhythm piece pops up in the shop. Especially when it comes to gravy boats which can be repurposed for a variety of tasks if you are not up to eating much gravy these days. Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we like to use them as recipe holders, planters, pantry organizers, hors d'oeuvre servers, and plant waterers.
