Vintage 1940s Homer Laughlin Floral Platter Marigold Shape circa 1941
...THE COLORS INCLUDE PINK, GREEN AND BLUE, AND THE EFFECT, FOR ALL ITS SIMPLICITY AND COMPARATIVE LACK OF COLOR IS AT ONCE STRIKING AND VERY ATTRACTIVE... (Regarding HOMER LAUGHLIN'S MARIGOLD SHAPE FROM THE POTTERY, GLASS AND BRASS SALESMAN, AUGUST 16, 1934)
{HISTORY}
A stylish rim, an inner loop of lacy gold filigree, and six floral swags marking the shoulder makes this one of the prettiest patterns in Homer Laughlin's library of interesting dishware designs.
Originally called the Daisy Cup, the scalloped edge would eventually become known as the Marigold shape. It was first created by Homer Laughlin in the early 1930s. Featuring an elegant Art Deco emblem-style fan design, it was first available in three underglaze colors - pink, green, and blue against a warm ivory background.
Instantly a popular seller, both the shape and fan motif were combined with other pattern decals and colors to create a pretty range of dishware that was both eclectic and colorful. This platter, made in 1941, combines the plain, unpainted Marigold embossed fan design with floral swags and gold filigree to create a colorful and shimmery pattern loaded with interest and appreal.
Colors include blueberry, raspberry, ice pink, gold, butter, and celadon against an ivory background that is stained to perfection with years of use and adoration. It's amazing to think that this platter was made during World War I and yet still retains such a bright color palette with crisp, clear lines and like-new shimmery filgree that has not faded or worn over time, even after 80 years of use. A little symbol of strength, durability and graceful aging, this one would look just as pretty hanging on a wall as it would on a table.
