{HISTORY}

Made by Homer Laughlin in 1947 just two years after World War II ended, this cheerful set of floral soup bowls surely must have reflected a post-war gaiety that brightened kitchens across the country. Part of HL's Theme Eggshell china pattern line which debuted in the 1930s, this series paired various colorful transferware florals with highly detailed raised rims. These soup bowls in particular feature an embossed grapevine rim and a bouquet of dancing roses, sunflowers, and peonies.

Inspired by a popular, more expensive English design created by Josiah Wedgwood,  Theme dishware was made using Homer Laughlin's lightweight dish style known as Eggshell. Thin, delicate, and graceful, this series mirrored real-life eggshells' strong but fragile composition. "Feather-light" was the term used by the Homer Laughlin marketing team, to describe this series of dishware which was 25% lighter in weight but also 25% stronger so that it could withstand all sorts of merriment in the kitchen nd the dining room. True to expectation, despite their dainty, fragile appearance, many HL eggshell dishes have traveled time beautifully. 

Available from the late 1930s through the early 1950s, Theme Eggshell dishes were made with a variety of different center floral bouquets, each pattern selected by discerning Homer Laughlin's dish designers to compliment the garland of fruit around the rim. Collecting a menagerie of designs within this series makes for a beautiful garden tablescape, but design opportunities also abound if you choose to make these bowls the showstopper of the meal. Spring onion soups, chilled summer fruit soup, warm buttery autumn squash soups, and spice-laden soups all look especially appetizing when served here in this set.   Effortless mix-and-match opportunities abound when paired with other dishes too, thanks to an array of complimentary colors found within the flowers.
