Vintage 1940's Atlas - Goode's School Atlas by J Paul Goode - Rand McNally & Company, 1947 Edition
Cooking is all about people. Food is maybe the only universal thing that really has the power to bring everyone together. No matter what culture, everywhere around the world, people get together to eat. Guy Fieri
Every good cook knows where their food comes from. That's as true today as it was 50 years ago. In the vintage kitchen, before the internet arrived, you had to consult books and atlas' like this one here to figure out where your pineapple came from and which types of climates could grow a bountiful olive tree. With a click of a button we can figure out all that stuff quickly now, but there is something to be said about the art of getting lost in an old atlas for an hour or two and really studying our planet on paper as opposed to screen.
This 1947 edition of Goode's School Atlas was published just after World War II so it reflects the effects of the war on the world with updated territory info and also includes information on physical, political and economic conditions. A fascinating collector's item for map lovers and history lovers, this colorful atlas features maps on climate conditions, population, ocean currents, communications, agriculture, occupations and much more in addition to maps of every country and continent.
The man behind the atlas was John Paul Goode (1862-1932), an American cartographer and geography professor who created his own mapping system of the world after realizing that previous maps of the world were distorting the north and south poles thus affecting the northern latitude lines. Goode's Atlas has become the accepted tool for world geography ever since he published in his first series of maps in 1923. Goode's School Atlas still continues to be revised and published to this day.
