{HISTORY}

Made in 1937 by Syracuse China, this pair of rare vintage fraternity dessert/salad plates was made by Syracuse China in Syracuse NY. Featuring the Greek letters of Theta Delta Chi (blue) and Zeta Psi (orange), these plates boast all the fun of college days spent in the dining halls and houses of the 1930s.

Both fraternities were founded in New York in 1847 - Zeta Psi at New York University (NYC) and Theta Delta Chi at Union College (Schenectady, NY). Although chapters of both fraternities can be found in over two dozen colleges and universities across the country, only Zeta Psi chapters can be found at all eight Ivy League schools. But that doesn't mean that these two plates didn't have schools in common. 

At least eleven schools and universities around the country contained chapters of Theta Delta Chi and Zeta Psi in 1937 including Lafayette College, Dartmouth, Cornell, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Williams College, UC Berkley, McGill University, Stanford, University of Washington, University of California at Los Angles, and University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana. 

Since these two plates were found together, it's fun to think they might have once belonged to alumni, or to proud parents, or to pledges whose lives and experiences were forever enhanced by being a part of these fraternal organizations. 

Containing navy blue stripes on one plate and pumpkin orange stripes on the other, these two are a dynamic pair when displayed together, but since they are from two different fraternal organizations, they are sold separately here in the shop. 

Very rare, hard-to-find pieces of college memorabilia these days, these two plates represent a unique moment of American university life experienced 87 years ago. Wonderful for decorating dorm rooms, home libraries, and of course kitchens too, camaraderie comes home to inspire your space with restaurant ware that adds a touch of treasured college life.

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition, these plates contain no chips, cracks or staining. There are some signs of utensil wear as expected of restaurant ware plates that are over 80 years old. The fraternity letters and stripes are crisp and clear on each plate. Please see photos.
