{HISTORY}

Featuring pink, yellow, and white flowers, accented with a ribbon of black and white stripes, this warm and sunny vintage platter is just the ticket to extend the summer season all year through.  

Made in the 1930s by W.S. George in East Palestine, Ohio, this platter was part of the pottery's Lido series -  a dish shape that combined both square and scalloped edging along the rim. The unique buttery yellow color of  the background, not quite ivory and not quite yellow, was called Canarytone and added an overall cheerful warmth to the patterns placed on top. This pattern doesn't have a name, but its zinnia-like flowers and vibrant colors give it a lovely garden aesthetic and colorful palette to inspire innumerable creative tablescape designs.

Founded by William Shaw George in 1904, the W.S. George Pottery Company operated four plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania where they made dishes for both the domestic market and the hotel industry. An incredibly successful and beloved pottery in Ohio and nationally recognized with showroom offices in New York and Chicago, W.S. George was the life passion of William Shaw George from the time he was a young boy until his early death in 1925 at the age of 60. Well-respected in his hometown of East Palestine, William was a highly regarded employer in the area, paying his employees well, spoiling them with annual company celebrations, and making sure that safety was the number one priority for all his workers. Following his death, William's sons took over the business, carrying it until 1955, when the pottery filed for bankruptcy.  Royal China Company purchased the W.S. George plants in an attempt to keep products in circulation, but RCC officially stopped production in 1960.

At the time this platter was made, many W.S. George pieces offered during the 1930s were part of giveaway promotions, tie-ins for movie theaters and furniture companies, and contest prizes. We don't know if this specific platter was a part of those festivities, but it is fun to imagine that it could have brought double the joy to the kitchen and the cook in more ways than one.

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition, this platter contains lots of aged character that hints at its 90 years of life and love. There are no chips or cracks but plenty of beautiful crazing marks and light staining to give it a time-traveled look. The gold stripe around the rim is wearing in most places. The floral details are crisp and bright. Please see photos.
