Vintage 1930s Fanny Farmer Egg Cup with Yellow Chicks
Everybody loves Fanny Farmer... (from a vintage advertisement for Sweetest Day)
{HISTORY}
First, there was Fannie Farmer and then there was Fanny Farmer. The first was well-known nutritionist, cookbook author, and teacher, Fannie Merritt Farmer (1857-1915) who revolutionized the cooking world with standardized measurements and then wrote a bestselling cookbook - the Boston Cooking-School Cook Book, now known as The Fannie Farmer Cookbook.
The second was Fanny Farmer, the chocolate shop named after Fannie M. but spelled differently to avoid confusion between the culinary wizard and the confectionery. The Fanny Farmer chocolate shop opened in upstate New York in 1919 and specialized in old-fashioned chocolates and confectionaries until it closed in 2004.
During the 1930s and 1940s, Fanny Farmer was the largest manufacturer of chocolates in the country. Always on a mission to add a smile to someone's day, during the hardscrabble times of the Great Depression, they offered deeply discounted prices to help give spirits a lift and also provided treats to the military during WWII. Fanny Farmer would eventually grow to over 400 retail shops and the brand would become a beloved icon of the 20th century just like the lady who inspired the company.
When this egg cup was made in the 1930s, it came packaged with a big chocolate egg that sat in the cup ready for gift-giving and then future kitchen use as a server for soft-boiled eggs. Nowadays vintage egg cups, like Fanny Farmers are harder to find making them very fun collectibles with their whimsical charm. Featuring two yellow chicks and the Fanny Farmer logo on back, this is a really cute piece of kitchen history that honors two of America's greats.
