 Cookies, cakes, flapjacks, crullers, pancakes, and so forth were a major part of the good old New England diet, and little need be said about the ruggedness of the people, nourished on such provender. They pioneered across the plains to build the West, and lived out of the cookie and cruller jars between battles, living dangerously - and living well. Louis De Gouy

{HISTORY}

Blueberry Upside Down, Lemon Layer, Coconut Cream, Blackberry Buckle. In the 1930s and 1940s, those were the types of summertime cakes you made to match this pretty summertime cake plate. Like Louis said above, these were the types of treats, served on plates like this, that brought smiles to faces year after year after year.

Made by Harker, the oldest pottery in America, this square beauty features the colorful Amy pattern with its bouquet of blousy poppies, or possibly hollyhocks, in shades of grape, white, and tomato red with a shimmery platinum border around the rim.

Offering the best of both worlds as far as size and shape go, this cake plate features the more unusual square shape with an inset circle giving it the ability to beautifully display both square and round confections.

The Amy pattern was a popular choice when it debuted in the 1930s.  As part of  Harker's Bakerite series, specially marked pieces were able to go from oven to table, table to fridge and back and forth all day long, always offering stylish presentation when it came to mealtimes, no matter how simple or elaborate the fare. This cake isn't stamped with the Bakerite mark, so chances are it was just intended for cake display on the table and counter, but it's fun to think about all the dessert parties this one has been involved in over the past 80+ years. That's a whole lot of delicious baking!

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

{CONDITION}

In lovely adored condition. This cake plate contains no chips, but it does contain two insignificant stress cracks on the frontside (which happens when a plate gets set down on a surface a little too hard). The cracks are very light on front, but the one on back is  a little darker. These age-old flaws do affect the overall integrity of the plate - it is still very strong and sturdy. There is also a little bit of light rubbing on the platinum trim in some areas as expected with authentic age and eighty years of life. The floral bouquets are bright, crisp and clear. Please see photos.
