The Vegetable Encyclopedia and Gardener's Guide by Victor Tiedjens - 1973 Edition
There is something in a man's soul that finds expression in a garden. Victor A. Tiedjens
{HISTORY}
From the man who invented hydroponic gardening, comes this very practical, very concise, very fascinating book covering all things vegetable gardening. Written by the talented Victor Tiedjens (1895-1975), a highly esteemed and celebrated American chemist and horticulturist, The Vegetable Encyclopedia and Gardener's Guide is really three books in one. Containing an encyclopedia of vegetables, an encyclopedia of herbs and a detailed and instructive garden guide on how to grow both, this informative book will walk you through all the steps needed to produce a successful garden. From selecting the right seeds and learning their proper soil conditions to carving out a realistic garden plot based on your time commitment and tool count, to maintaining the garden once established, there is a plethora of information to be discovered here.
First published in 1943, this is the 1973 reprint which has retained all the original 1940's illustrations and instruction. Learn how to build a waterless garden system, how to grow mushrooms two different ways (The Penn State Method vs. The New Jersey Method) and how to identify common weeds. Make your own fertilizers, understand the science behind the stems, study the protein, sugar, and mineral content of each vegetable, and build a hotbed, a coldframe and a greenhouse. Control garden pests, make your own mulch, study the frost date tables, select the right garden tool for the right garden job. These are some of the variety of subjects tackled here.
When Victor set out to write this book in the early 1940's, he was focusing on both the practicalities and the science of gardening. Studying the nutritional needs of vegetables and herbs, led him to understand the requirements of specific plants and the environments they thrived in. A true expert in his field Victor spent his entire career, studying, teaching and investigating the plant life around him both in the United States and in experimental stations in the Caribbean.
