The Summer Noisy Book by Margaret Wise Brown - 1951 Edition Illusrtated by Leonard Weisgard
Books have always, for as long as I can recall, been a source of real magic in this wildly confusing world. Leonard Weisgard
{HISTORY}
When a poodle named Muffin heads from the city to the country on holiday, he discovers a wealth of new and interesting summer noises. Especially one that is the loudest of all. What are these seasonal sounds that captivate Muffin, and which one produces the loudest of all? In order not to spoil the fun, you’ll have to read the book from start to finish.
Written in 1951 by beloved American children's book author Margaret Wise Brown (1910-1952), this simple premise opens up a world of captivating summer sounds enhanced with colorful art by award-winning American illustrator Leonard Weisgard (1916-2000).
At once familiar but also unexpected, given Margaret's unique talent for engaging a young reader's sense of intrigue and discovery, each new aspect of country life experienced in The Summer Noisy Book is presented first using onomatopoeia techniques, giving readers the opportunity to guess at the source of each sound a page before it is revealed.
Part of a series of Noisy books first debuting in 1939, The Summer Noisy Book was published in 1951, the last in the series of eight. It was also one of the last books published before Margaret's tragic death at the age of 42.
Many know Margaret from two of her best-sellers, Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny, which have captivated readers of all ages for generations. An interesting woman and a talented writer, she's one of our favorite authors here In The Vintage Kitchen. Read more about Margaret over on the blog.
Illustrating over 200 books throughout his career, Leonard was a Caldecott Medal award winner and a long-time collaborator with Margaret Wise Brown on many of her books. Throughout his life, design was his throughline, and after studying art in college, in addition to illustrating books, he was also involved in theatrical set and costume design for the ballet, window display design, magazine illustration, and children's education.
Fun and engaging, each page of The Summer Noisy Book is frame-worthy on its own. And whether you are reading it to your little one or they are reading it to you, it’s such a delightful story; we bet you’ll be looking for the other seven books in the series to complete your collection.
